Ref: Equine encephalomyelitis PRNT Panel (EEE,WEE,VEE) - REWVPRNT Sample Details: 2 ml Serum Cost/Fee: $46.00 (+ referral fees; see comment) Comment: This test is used for acute and convalescent serology on any species. It is also used for vaccinal titers on equines. If testing for EEE on clinical suspects equines, the EEE IgM Elisa is the recommended test.Referral test fee is set by the referring lab and may change without notice; also, a $30.00 handling fee is added for each accession sent to each referring lab. Referral Lab needs sample on Monday for Tuesday test run. Please provide the US state in which the horse is residing and whether the horse has a neurologic condition or is clinically normal on the submission form. The sample will not be forwarded for testing until we have that information. Details Reference Ranges Test Interpretations Referral Information Lab Section: Referral Description: This is a virus plaque reduction neutralization test for Eastern (EEE), Western (WEE) and Venezuelan (VEE) equine encephalitis viruses. This test detects antibodies produced either by natural exposure to the viruses or vaccination. These tests are currently only available as this panel. None of these tests can be ordered individually. Min Sample Volume: 0.5 ml Collection Container: Red top blood collection tube Coolant: Refrigerate. Ship overnight in insulated container with ice packs Test Target: Antibody Test Days: Tuesday Test Turnaround (business days): 3 - 5 days No Reference Ranges Serum samples referred to the USDA National Laboratory (NVSL) for EEE antibody testing will be processed in one of two ways. Serum samples from acute neurological cases will be tested by an IgM ELISA test, which requires only a single serum sample to determine a recent EEE infection. Non-clinical serum samples submitted for an assessment of current antibody status is now being tested by a plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT). This test is simply another test format for determining the presence of neutralizing antibodies that has traditionally been used for testing exposure to “arboviruses”. Titers given by this assay can be interpreted in the same manner as a standard microplate neutralization assay. However, as the assay is now being done by the USDA, the test is only semi-quantitative in that only two dilutions of the serum are tested: 1:10 and 1:100. Interpretation of results is negative at 1:10 = no detectable, (Nt Ab); positive 1:10 = low Ab level (positive); 1:100 = moderate Ab level (positive) ; > 1:100 = high level of Ab(positive). At present there are no published guidelines relating these Ab levels and protection from clinical disease. USDA runs a panel when vaccine titers are requested including EEE, VEE, WEE and all three viruses are tested. If testing suspect clinical animals, IgM testing is done for only EEE and WNV. There is no panel for IgM testing. Each virus is tested individually.
