Lawsonia intracellularis qPCR - LAWPCR

Sample Details: Feces, illium, or tonsillar tissue
Cost/Fee: $36.75
Comment: Due to the intracellular growth of this bacterium, it cannot be cultured for diagnostic purposes. Based on experimental studies in foals, detection of fecal shedding by PCR is expected to occur at 12-18 days after infection, which is approximately the same time frame as onset of clinical signs; shedding may last for 7-21 days (Pusterla et al. J Vet Intern Med 2010). In pigs, shedding starts one week after infection (just after the onset of clinical signs) and may last intermittently for up to 12 weeks; pigs given the modified-live vaccine may be positive by PCR for up to 9 weeks (Guedes et al. Vet Microbiol 2003).

Lab Section: Molecular Diagnostics

Description: This qPCR assay detects the aspartate ammonia lyase (aspA) gene of Lawsonia intracellularis, the causative agent of proliferative enteropathy (also known as Ileitis), in any host species.
