Equine Respiratory PCR Panel - ERPNL

Sample Details: 1)1 Nasal Swab or 2) deep pharyngeal swab or 3)trans-trachael wash or Bronchoalveolar lavage or 4) lung tissue
Cost/Fee: $115.00 *SEE COMMENTS BELOW
Comment:

Nasal, nasopharyngeal, or oropharyngeal swabs collected from horses with respiratory disease signs.

Submit swabs in sterile, sealed vials with several drops of saline added, to prevent desiccation. Bacterial transport media are not appropriate for PCR assays. If culture is desired, submit a separate swab in an acceptable bacterial transport media. Cotton, plastic, wood-handled, and Dacron and other synthetic swabs are all acceptable for PCR-based assays. Calcium alginate swabs should be avoided.

Nasopharyngeal wash,  tracheal wash and broncho-alveolar lavage samples are also appropriate respiratory samples from horses.  Post-mortem lung tissue can also be tested.

NOTE: For EHV-1 and EHV-4 suspect horses, it is also recommended that you submit an EDTA whole blood sample at the same time as you submit the nasal swab, for EHV-1 and/or EHV-4 PCR testing. This broad respiratory panel is not appropriate for testing whole blood since only EHV-1 and EHV-4 would be likely to be detected in a blood sample.  Blood specimens submitted with respiratory samples will be tested for EHV-1 (and EHV-4 if requested) and additional fees will be applied.

In addition, if EHV-1 is detected, you can request Equine Herpes Virus 1 Neurological Genotyping to determine if the infecting strain has the "neurotropic" mutation. That will also incur a separate fee.
