Canine Distemper PCR - DIS

Comment: Canine distemper virus infection can cause severe clinical illness and mortality in domestic and wild canids, raccoons, skunks, and some wild felids. This assay is also part of the canine respiratory disease complex panel.  Additional commonly identified pathogens in dogs with respiratory disease include Canine adenovirus 5, canine respiratory coronavirus (beta Coronavirus), canine pneumovirus, canine influenza virus, and mycoplasma cynos, canine influenzavirus and Bordatella bronchiseptica and canine parainfluenza virus 5.  Swabs in bacterial transport media are not appropriate. Cotton, plastic, wood-handled, and Dacron and other synthetic swabs are all acceptable. Calcium alginate swabs should be avoided

Lab Section: Molecular Diagnostics

Description: The test is designed to identify canine distemper virus (CDV) in dogs and other carnivores with acute respiratory disease. It uses the RT-qPCR molecular method to amplify and detect a short region from the nucleocapsid (N) gene of CDV.tects virus RNA through molecular amplification

Min Sample Volume: 5 ml urine, 1 g tissue, 1 swab

Collection Container: Submit swabs in sterile, sealed vials with several drops of saline added, to prevent desiccation in in commercial virus transport media. Bacterial transport medias are not appropriate. Cotton, plastic, wood-handled, and Dacron and other synthetic swabs are all acceptable. Calcium alginate swabs should be avoided. Submit urine or tissues in a screw topped vial.

Coolant: Refrigerate. Ship overnight on ice packs.

Test Days: M-F as needed
