This interpretation applies to both H3N8 and H3N2 CIV HI testing:
The hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibody titer is the reciprocal of the highest dilution of serum that prevents the agglutination of red blood cells by influenza A viruses. (endpoint dilution of 1:128 = HI antibody titer of 128). Titers are in units of antibody and as such all values reported without modifiers contain that specified amount of antibody in the sample. Values with a < (less than symbol) indicate no detectable antibody at the minimum readable dilution (<8 = no detectable antibody at a 1:8 dilution). An antibody titer can result from vaccination, infection, or passive maternal transfer.
For Canine Influenza Virus the following guidelines are offered:
HI titer <8 - no exposure to canine influenza virus or sample collected in very acute phase of the infection. Second serum needed to define status of an acutely ill dog.
HI titers 8-128 - serum collected in acute phase of infection or Ab titers due to vaccination.
HI titers >128 - evidence of exposure to canine influenza virus.
